Over the weekend an excited reader sent us a teaser video for the upcoming Samsung Galaxy S III. It was clearly a fake since the video producer used graphics from last year’s Galaxy S II teaser, but it still got us excited for what could be the biggest Android phone launch of 2012.
Galaxy S III rumors go back several months, including a description posted to 4chan and a leaked slide allegedly from Samsung. We still don’t know the exact specs, but it’s starting to become more clear what we might find inside Samsung’s next flagship device.
Rumored specs of the Galaxy S III include:
Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich with Samsung’s TouchWiz UI
4.6 inch HD Super AMOLED Plus display
1.5 GHz quad-core Exynos 4412 processor
1.5-2 GB RAM
12 MP rear camera
The two cornerstone specs that are almost certain to appear in the Galaxy S III are Samsung’s own AMOLED display and Exynos processor. This year Samsung introduced Super AMOLED Plus displays with Samsung’s “Real Stripe” (3 subpixels) RGB RGB subpixel arrangement (instead of PenTile) and later debuted HD Super AMOLED with resolutions up to 1280×800. Samsung is said to be working on an HD Super AMOLED Plus display with the “Real Stripe” subpixel arrangment, so that’s a good candidate for the Galaxy S III.
When it comes to the processor, we should see a quad-core 1.5 GHz Exynos 4412. Not a lot is known about the Exynos 4412, but we expect it to be built with Samsung’s 32nm low power process with high-k metal gate technology and feature a faster GPU. Samsung could use the newer Mali-T604 GPU, which delivers up to 5x performance improvement over previous Mali graphics processors.
Samsung also announced the 2 GHz Exynos 5250 with two Cortex-A15 cores, but that is expected to appear in tablets and become available in the 2nd half of 2012 after the Galaxy S III hits stores.
With CES 2012 less than a month away, I expect Samsung will start leaking more details about the Galaxy S III after their competitors unveil new smartphones in Las Vegas. Hopefully they have a few surprises in store that we have failed to see coming.
As some of you may remember, one of our reliable tipsters already told us Samsung has a few devices arriving in early 2012 that will “blow minds” and that they were a “big step past the Galaxy Nexus class, in every way.” Hardware specs are still important to me, but I’m hoping Samsung can deliver some new experiences that will help them differentiate their flagship device.
