First announced by NVIDIA back in February, the new Tegra 3 mobile processor is now ready for prime time, and it will integrate the premier processor towards the future ASUS Eee Pad Transformer Prime.
Formerly known as "Kal-El", the new Tegra 3 is said to be able to provide five times more performance with lesser power consumption as compared to Tegra 2. It is built with a new technology that NVIDIA dubbed as Variable Symmetric Multiprocessing which features an extra low power core.
The Tegra 3’s CPU clock speed depends on the number of active cores which can go up to 1.4GHz in single core mode and 1.3GHz in multi-core mode while the lower power core provides speed of up to 500MHz. All these cores are dynamically activated whenever the need arises in which translates to a long-lasting battery life of up to 12 hours for 720p HD video playback.
The new Tegra 3 mobile processor also comes with a 12-core GeForce GPU that offers up to three times more graphical performances than Tegra 2 and more realism through dynamic lighting, physical effects and high resolution environments. In addition to that, it also offers full support for game controllers as well as NVIDIA 3D Vision technology via HDMI 1.4a.
